Web 2.0, 4 skills and 5 Cs

Web 2.0!? What's that? Is it your first time to hear about this topic, if so, please check the resource area for some useful information (articles, slide shows, video clips). I am sure you will enjoy the journey of web 2.0, hopefully a fruitful one. In this blog, we will first discuss three major questions about Web 2.0 and language teaching and learning. Followed by that, we will investigate relevant tools that could be applied in English and Chines language settings! Are you excited? Say, yes!

As an *ESL/CSL language teacher or learner, what's your perspective of Web 2.0? Do you think it's just a fashionable trend or business hype or can it be applied to language teaching and learning? In terms of the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) or 5Cs(communication, culture, connections, comparisons, communities ), what may be most useful about it?

*ESL: English as a Second Language ; CSL: Chinese as a Second Language

I would rather think Web 2.0 have more impact on 5Cs. In my opinion, people use Web 1.0 as a tool of sharing and searching of information. However, Web 2.0 is more likely become part of our life. For example, comparing with people lived in 10 years ago, for the new generation of people, they can easily make foreigner friend from interenet. Therefore, it affect 5Cs.

Hi Li-Chung, I totally agree with your point. The 5 Cs are actually connected with the application of Web 2.0 tools, yet we are not certain about the impact of Web 2.0 on the foreign language teaching and learning. Making Web 2.0 tools aligned or integrated with the core curriculum seems to be a main focus in instructional design. The conversation between the SMEs and IT people seems to be required in order to pinpoint where instructional technology is leading us to.

Web 2.0...hmmm....what a fancy slogan. Actually, before I viewed this blog entry, I don't know what exactly Web 2.0 is even though I heard it everyday and see it everywhere. Thank you for the link you shared with us. Now I know the stuffs I work and play with everyday are labeled with a buzzword--Web 2.0.
Given this, I would say that as for me Web 2.0 is a buzzword, an eye-catching package. The content under that package is the diverse internet technology/application. Thus, when things come to the question if Web 2.0 can be applied to language teaching and learning, it's simply like asking if internet technology can be used to facilitate language teaching and learning. As a student whose major is instructional technology, my answer should be positive, right? :)
Technology is simply a tool. Tool can be used for diverse purposes. Thus, the point is how to use the tool to fulfill the purpose.

while reading the resources you collect and share, one thought came to my mind..
One feature of Web 2.0 is that user is the point.Hmmm...it reminds me the learner-centered teaching/learning. Thus, I guess the feature of Web 2.0 has some potential for enabling learner-centered learning.

It seems that I am living behind this word when reading this term on your blog. I also looked up some websites for the term, and it seems to be the advent of the new era of individual's blogs. But I am wondering how people take good use of it (or the platform will be set handy). Language learning opportunities would definitely increase with added functions on the blogs.

No worry Laura! You can still catch up since Web 2.0 is a new concept to many language teachers and learners. And I am learning and update my knowledge of it too. Do you think it's possible to adopt some of the tools in your English classes?

The 5Cs are good pedagogical indicators when we are designing or analyzing language programs/classes. Let's dig into it and link these elements with other language learning theories.

Web 2.0 helps bridge the gap and network with the world. Although it's trendy, ultimately language teachers need to think carefully about where they're leading their students to in terms of the language learning goals.

With Web 2.0, businessmen and promoters would find it much easier to sell products. And it's a media for young people to broad their relationship with others. It is the profound effect which stimulates more teachers to apply this tool to access teaching.
