WWW vs. LLC

Almost all the people in the modern world know what and where World Wide Web is. People can make use of it to learn languages anytime anywhere. For students, Language Learning Center probably is the place they can go and learn whatever they choose. The learning materials both in the web and in the center include videos, audios, and written texts and can engage learners to do listening, speaking, reading and writing in some way. I wonder if the application of web 2.0 for learning will replace the set-up of Language Learning Center in the future. Is it just like a worry that computers will replace teachers? What will teachers answer to this question? What about students’ opinions? Can anyone in the world wide web give a response to this issue?

computers dont' replace teachers, but improve learning technology.
we can talk with teacher by skype from difference site, and watch the same display of computer as we sit in the learning center to hear teacher's voice.

because the computer is so stupid that can't understand student's complicate question. so we must need teacher to modify our writing and talking.

In my opinion, computers are not able to replace all teachers of every field; however, teachers of language teaching may be replaced by computers. If every mom can teach her children how to listen, speak, read and write, there's no reason to not believe a computer with GOOD learning materials can teach languages. Hence, there are some important issues for academic research in language teahing:
1. how to develop/establish GOOD learning materials for computers;
2. how to evaluate learning materials for computers;
3. how to apply new technology to learning materials for computers.

Teachers or computers are just objects what students learn from. A teacher with good learning materials will not be replaced by a computer without good learning materials. A computer with good learning materials can easily replace a teacher without good learning materials. Yes! That's my point: materials decide everything. :D

By the way, not every computer is so stupid. My cellphone can understand my voice commands WITHOUT pre-learning my tone. In 1997, a chess-playing computer called "DEEP BLUE" won a gentleman who was a world chess champion. My point is that a well-designed computer is probably smarter than you and me. Not only web browsing, chating via internet, and email sending/receiving, a computer can do more than we know. Thus, please do not depreciate computers.

I can see Amon’s point about why computers cannot replace teachers given the authentic interactivity and corrective feedback from human teachers. I realize IT industry has kept researching on artificial intelligence and maybe someday a super computer may act like a real teacher. Who knows? Also, I appreciate How’s suggestions of the curriculum development, assessment and application in language instructional design. Good educational deliverables do take time/money to invest and test. I cordially wish there could be more funding for educators or designers to carry out theses jobs.

I don't think the web can replace the human touch. Teachers will always be needed. There's something about human nature wanting to communicate and be in touch with another living being. Furthermore, the human interaction makes the learning fun and interesting.

Hi Chialing, Are you the one I know at UPenn? I think human teachers will not be replaced by computers since machines don’t have feelings and souls. I enjoy having the personal connections with a real person since I am spending all day among technology.

I suppose web 2 can be beneficiary to the world audience for the expansion of creativities and ideas, a lot more users can gain knowledge through this user based system (where contents of the site are mainly contributed by the users themselves). But if speaking of language learning through web 2, I thought it never really is a very successful way in learning a language “correctly”, not that it does not influence the users who wish to learn another language and all, but more on the content posted up by different forums, blogs, social networking sites (facebook, myspace) in which anyone can have some say on a particular topic and publish it to the world at large. I think it is for this free expression of speech, free style communication that makes web 2 seems “unattractive” especially when users’ intensions aren’t sharing but in learning, thus there should be some cautions from the users in the material they are viewing. Don’t get me wrong, I am not an opponent in web 2, I just thought with the feature of it provides, precautions are necessary when language learners try to dive into this world of user-oriented community, where casual talk and slang are freely expressed. Since web 2 does support faster download and upload speed, stimulating wider spread of net learning technology, telecommunication and online language lessons can certainly be an aspect of web 2 where people do benefit from it by learning stuff online, language and etc.
Lastly, I think web 2 is far from replacing teachers; however it is capable of reaching a level where they can be the companion, tool of teachers.
A little helper at its best potential. lol

I don’t think computers could replace teachers, neither could the web 2.0 replace the language center. First, no matter how the technology develops, it lacks humanity. This is very similar to piano performance---the machine couldn’t replace the pianist because of lack of humanity and personal charm! Second, there may be technical problems from time to time with the technology/Internet/computers, and at the end, “humans” have to fix it. Therefore, I don’t think the application of web 2.0 for learning will replace the set-up of Language Learning Center in the future.

Kyle Huang said...

To Jack for his insightful feedback! Before fully diving into the world of Web 2.0, we users do need more attentive reading to rethink the essence of learning. In my interview clip 3 and 4, Dan V., a FLE PhD students and a beginning Mandarin Chinese leaner, also indicated the danger of this type of bottom-up approach given the possibility of the blind lead the blind, and the lack of a filtering system to verify the content. For this reason, I am sure that the teacher takes an indispensable role in facilitating learning as well as guiding the students on the targeted learning tasks. Technologies support the different subject areas of the main curriculum, but only within the appropriate use in the appropriate contexts and settings.

Kyle Huang said...

To Agnela, I think the technical problem in the IT implementation is not uncommon yet unavoidable. I can tell this from my experience of joining a World Geography Cultural Exchange Project at Anderson High School in Austin this fall semester. Guess what? The first day when assisting students with registering for the Gmail accounts, we got problems of cookies and wireless connection so our schedule was postponed a bit. But thanks God, we eventually found a multimedia room to take care of all the issues.

I think computer never replace teacher, after all, it just a machine. But computer really brings lots of benefits of our learing, we really can use it a lot! and sometime it can help teacher to teach students.

Kyle Huang said...

Hi Tillie, it's good to reflect on the pros and cons of the computer-mediated teaching and learning vs. the traditional teacher-based one, so we can know the appropriate timing to adopt computers to empower our individual learners through the lens of critical literacy where reading and writing go beyond the conventional fashion.

In the information explosion age, the computer is surely a convenient tool for our daily life. In school, teachers can use it to design more diverse and rich
curriculums, to incite students' learning motivation, and to interact with studentsd through email or discussion board. However, I don't think the computer can replace teachers, because it's just a tool to help teachers' teaching. In other words, if the computer has good influence on students' learning, that is because teachers use it very well on their teaching.

Kyle Huang said...

Hi Yi-ru, I think the assumption of the conclusion that computers can't replace teachers relies on good quality of teaching from teachers. I am sure you will be an outstanding teacher in the future considering your personality, profession and faith in God.

I am WenMing, I think the computer or networking equipment to reduce the cost and manpower costs, time costs.
This is because there are multiple components language, pronunciation, customs, history and culture, many. I think the greatest difference between man and machine, the people who moved and the cold machines.
Quick to learn a language, the need
1. Appropriate teachers, classmates fitness point
2. Sustainable environment
Although the high manpower costs,
You can use these new technologies, assistance, used together. Like, things will be different, put together, as if they are synchronized.

Kyle Huang said...

To WenMing, yes, computer machines per se can't move and are subject to locations compared to human teachers. Even with excellent computer-assisted language learning projects and state-of-the-art infrastructures, we still need good teachers and administrators to implement the ideas and guide students through the learning tasks and problem-solving processes.

I doubt that web learning technology can totally replace human teachers. Computer technology is definitely good in some aspects for learning language, such as enhance learners' listening skill. The reason is that computer won't complain the repetitive action. However, it also implies that it is just a machine and it will turn out to be boring activity.

In teaching field, we have been trying different programs again and again, and we utilize various audiovisuals ourselves in order to make the students understand the lesson. However, those methods are sometimes still halting to support our teaching.

now, through the Internet, we would be easily able to show diverse learning resources to the students, which does benefit us a lot. But the question whether the teachers are needed is really hard to say.

Due to the learning background, we learn from the teachers because they could teach us and, most of all, share many individual experiences with us. Therefore, even though we can put any kind of materials on the Internet and make it action-packed, we may still prefer being taught live now. But, anything is possible, maybe the new generation will enjoy learning themselves since they could have new learning style. I'm quite interested in the future of teaching.

In my opinion, I think the application of web 2.0 for learning will replace the set-up of language learning center in the future. On the other hand, teachers will not be replaced by computures. Even though it is covinent for us to get any kind of informaion we want. The learning environment in the classroom and the learning materials can be changed into virtual computer world. But in fact, it's just a tool to assist us in our learning. Not every students have good ability in self-learning. They need teacher to give them knowledge. Trough teachers' experiences, they know what is most important to students. In the calssroom, teacher can interacts with students and they also can give teacher their feedback. Everyone can participate in each lesson.

There's always a trade-off no matter what kind of media we are opting to use in language education. Web provides a multitude of variety and possibility as well as reduce the cognitive load of Ss in terms of its richness. Nonetheless, as a teacher we should always have a clear picture in mind about where we are leading our Ss to. Say, the contexts, contents and their impacts on Ss' learning experience. That's the value of human teachers because we are able to create something out of nothing and make the impossible possible.

In fact, the learning software is made by two Taiwan national univerity professiors and is really great. However, there are still some flaws. First, no matter how wonderful and interestin the learning software is, most students can not be calm and concentrate on the courses more than 30 minutes. Second, they are sometimes confused about the direction of letters. For example, "b" and "d" are the most common events. I think that's because they are lack of writing experiences. Last, computer equipment is very expensive than other tradition teaching classroom, some students still can't afford it. So I think compuers can not replace teachers.

Technology is constantly changing. The www has now evolved into “Web 2.0” and is the second wave of the World Wide Web. Most of us still follow the textbook type of teaching, where the students are made to by-heart, recite and write what is taught by us. As teachers how evolved are we in terms of incorporating technology with the curriculum? In an era of global connectivity teachers should be actively involved to make the students aware of the digital tools available and how effectively they can be used for learning purposes. Such learning methodologies creates a sense of “self directed” learning and problem solving attitude among students.
